Horses galloping in Kentucky bluegrass pasture
Plan Your Visit

A practical field guide to the Bourbon Trail.

01

When to come

Late April through October offers the warmest welcome — bluegrass in bloom, distillery patios open, and the Kentucky Derby (first Saturday in May) bookending the season. October's autumn light is unmatched.

02

Getting here

Fly into Louisville (SDF), Lexington (LEX), or Cincinnati (CVG, 90 min from Lexington). International travelers commonly connect through Atlanta, Chicago, or Detroit. Many tour operators offer airport pickup.

03

Where to base yourself

Louisville for nightlife and urban distilleries. Bardstown for storybook small-town charm and the densest cluster of distilleries. Lexington for horse country and a craft trail.

04

Booking your tour

Reserve at least 3–4 weeks ahead in peak season — heritage distillery slots vanish first. Most operators on this directory book directly via their websites; we never charge a fee.

05

What to know about tastings

Kentucky law permits up to 1.75 oz of bourbon per distillery tasting. Most tours visit 2–4 distilleries — pace yourself, eat well, and never drive. That's why drivers exist.

06

For international visitors

U.S. customs allows one liter of bourbon duty-free per adult on return. Many distillery gift shops ship internationally. Bring your passport — it's required ID for tastings, even if you look 50.
